![]() ![]() Because Sony has made the new Sony A7 MII bigger and heavier to fit the image stabilisation the A7 is also the smallest and lightest full frame camera (with interchangeable lens). Unfortunately the original FE lenses are quite expensive. That makes this by far the cheapest new full frame camera available right now (The next cheapest ff camera is the Nikon D610 which is 1450 euro without lens). And because of the introduction of the new A7 MII the prices of the original A7 have dropped significantly, at the moment you can buy the A7 with the FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens (click here for my review of this lens) for about 1350 euros, and just the body without lens can be found for as little as 1150 euros (prices in the Netherlands april 2015). The A7 is still available new, and Sony hasn’t officially discontinued the model. So is this camera still relevant? I think it is, for several reasons. Even its predecessor the A7 MII has been on the market for a few months now. ![]() A camera that has been on the market for well over a year now. So this review is about the original Sony A7 camera (buy it using my affiliate link here: Adorama, or ). In this review I’ll tell you more about the A7 in day to day use from an amateur photographers point of view. In the A7 series there are 4 different models, the A7R with the high resolution 36 megapixel sensor, the A7S the low resolution low light photo and video specialist camera, the recently introduced A7 MII with built in image stabilisation and the original Sony A7. The Sony A7 series are the only mirrorless interchangeable lens full frame cameras on the market right now. This is a real world user review about the full frame Sony A7 mirrorless camera. If you are still interested: please read my full review and see if this is the camera for you. If you are a snob who likes to impress people with the latest and greatest tech. The A7 had very good dynamic range for its day, but has been surpassed by other camera’s since The A7 offers a very decent 24 megapixel that will be more than enough for almost any application, but it has its limits The grip and ergonomics on this original A7 aren’t perfect, the A7II is a big step forward in that regard You are planning to use it with big and/ or heavy lenses. You need blazing fast auto focus with the newest functionality (for instance the A7 has great eye-AF, but it will only work in single focus mode). You can live with basic smartphone connectivity that will allow you to share images and use live view remotely, but not much more. You can live with a decent but not very high resolution EVF.You can live with very decent high ISO performance up to about ISO 6400.You can live without in body stabilisation and can rely on lenses with stabilisation or bright primes where you can use higher shutter speeds. You can live with only one SD-card slot. You don’t mind bringing some back-up batteries, the A7 eats them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You need (or want) a full frame camera with very good image quality. It isn’t perfect, but with current second-hand prices (some go for less than 500 euros – for a full frame camera that is crazy) the Sony A7 still is and will be a perfect introduction to Full Frame E-mount. But that doesn’t mean this isn’t a good camera anymore. Sony’s own newer A7’s like the A7III and A7IV are tremendous cameras that are better in almost any way besides size. Yes, there are newer camera’s on the market that have surpassed the A7 in many ways. In this review you can read what I thought about it in 2015, and what I wrote then is stil true today. Combined with my Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 lens this is a full frame pocketable camera! I kept going back to the A7 because it is compact, easy and fun to use and delivers very high image quality. I loved it so much I bought (and eventually sold it again to upgrade to other camera’s) it no less than 3 times. Good idea! As you can read in my review below the Sony A7 was a very capable camera back in 2015. Back then this was Sony’s first try in building a true full frame mirrorless camera, and I loved it. If you are reading this you are probably thinking about buying a second hand Sony A7. ![]()
